Austin Woman Magazine Loves Us!

We are blessed with countless great local media outlets here in Austin. From television and newspapers, to magazines and locally based blogs, we have a great assortment of information sources. Nothing makes us happier than when we get specifically noticed by these local folks, so we were thrilled when we got included in Austin Woman Magazine’s latest issue! The article was entitled “Snack Attack,” and gave some healthy snacking options for the health conscious snacker. Author Andy East sets up the article by examining the current Texas health climate.

“People say everything is bigger in Texas, but unfortunately, the old adage also describes Texans’ waistlines. According to F as in Fat: How Obesity Threatens America’s Future, as of 2013, nearly 7.8 million Texans were clinically obese, meaning they sported a Body Mass Index of at least 30. While dieting may not be the only factor contributing to Texas’ obesity epidemic, healthy eating habits can go a long way to improving our well-being. And what better way to inject some extra nutrients in to your family’s diet than with a healthy snack? Saddle up as Austin Woman helps you stave off temptation with some delectable, healthy snacks done Austin-style.”

East then suggests some healthy snacking options including nuts, kale chips, and coconut milk ice cream. Here’s what he had to say about kale chips:

“While kale may not be everyone’s cup of tea, by adding a pinch of zest to this nutrient-rich green, kale chips could do the trick. One cup of kale contains enough vitamins and nutrients to put the entire food pyramid to shame. Just one cup of kale is loaded with more than 200 percent of the daily value of vitamin A and more than 600 percent of vitamin K, the latter of which can safeguard you from several different cancers.
Kale is also high in calcium, iron, vitamin C and potent antioxidants. In recent years, companies like Austin’s Rhythm Superfoods have begun to produce kale chips, available in an assortment of flavors such as pineapple coconut, zesty nacho and Texas BBQ. When eaten in moderation, kale chips can be a nice alternative to fried potato chips.”
