Today is Earth Day, and all eyes are on nature! It is a beautiful day today here in Austin, and we hope that everyone else around the country is experiencing this gorgeous spring weather. It’s fitting that today be so beautiful outside, because that’s what today is all about. As part of the healthy living world, we believe that taking care of our planet is just as important as taking care of our bodies. Here are some quick Earth Day facts that everyone should know!

Today marks the 44th anniversary of Earth Day; a day intended to inspire awareness and appreciation for Earth’s natural environment.

The day came about as a reaction to a massive oil spill in waters near Santa Barbara, California, in 1969.

More than 20 million people participated in the first Earth Day in 1970, and by the end of that year, Congress authorized the creation of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

Although it was started in the United States, by 1990, Earth Day was a global phenomenon, with over 200 million participants in 140 countries. It is now the world’s largest civic observance, with over 1 billion participants.

The theme of the 2014 Earth Day is “Green Cities,” inspiring millions of people to creat a sustainable, healthy environment by greening communities worldwide.

NASA is participating in Earth Day this year with the agency’s #GlobalSelfie event, asking people to take a photo of themselves outside and post it to social media using the hashtag #GlobalSelfie. NASA will use the images to create a mosaic image of Earth that will be a new “Blue Marble” built with your photos. Get more info on how to participate here.
